Legislators Debate Need for Special Session
Posted 5 September 2008
Iowa's lawmakers this week are
debating whether it's necessary to convene a special session of the
Iowa Legislature to respond to the state's flood issues.
Their decision is compounded as the state continues to wait for federal
recovery help. The state will be expected to cover the costs of flood
related needs that federal funding does not.
State Republicans are heading to Cedar Rapids today, Friday, Sept. 5,
to call attention to the flood damage and recovery efforts there. They
are in favor of calling a special session focused on flood response.
Democrats, after reviewing a state-wide flood damage report issued by
the governor's commission released earlier his week, will discuss the
possibility of a special session via a conference call.
Local county and city leaders also endorse the need for a special
session of the Iowa Legislature. They say the Iowa Legislature
shouldn't wait until January to pass disaster relief measures.
Officials estimate calling a special session could cost the state about
$50,000 a day.
