Fishing Conditions Good for Holiday Weekend
Posted 28 August 2008
This week's Iowa Fishing Report
reported good conditions for the Mississippi River along Allamakee,
Clayton and Dubuque counties.
Mississippi River Pools 9 to 15: Fishing success continues to be fair
to good on the Mississippi River. On Thursday, water levels were as
follows: Lansing 7.8 feet, Lynxville, Wis., 12.2 feet, McGregor 6.8
feet, Guttenberg 4.1 feet, Dubuque 7.43 feet, Bellevue 4.51 feet, and
Camanche 9.49 feet. Water levels are stable to slowly falling and
temperature is in the upper 70s. Be careful when boating on the
Mississippi as a lot of new snags have appeared after the spring floods.
Walleye fishing is fair along the wingdams from Pool 9 through 15. Use
a three-way rig tipped with a leech or night crawler along the front
edge of the wing dams.
Fishing is good to excellent for channel catfish along rocky shorelines
and riprap areas. Channel catfish also can be found near fallen snags
and the holes behind the wing dams in Pools 9 through 15.
Anglers fishing in Pools 9 through 15 are having good success fishing
for both smallmouth and largemouth bass. Look for areas with moderate
current and structure, such as wood or rocks. Bass also concentrate
along rocky shorelines with drop-offs.
Bluegill fishing is good in Pools 9 through 15 on wax worms or garden
worms suspended under a bobber fished along rip rapped shorelines or
near woody structure adjacent to the channel.
Crappie fishing is fair to good with most fishing occurring in deeper
slough areas using crappie rigs and slowly trolling around the snags
and woody cover in the backwater areas and side channels.
Northern pike can be caught on spinnerbaits or topwater baits fished
near Harpers Ferry in Pool 10 and in the Guttenberg tailwater.
A few white bass are reportedly hitting spinners and jigs fished near
Clayton in Pool 10 and around the wing dams in Pool 11. The white bass
have not been plentiful but some really nice sized ones are being
reported.
Walleye fishing is good on night crawlers in the Upper Iowa River in
Winneshiek and Allamakee counties. Fishing is excellent for smallmouth
bass using spinners and jigs.
