BioBlitz Event this Weekend
Posted 22 August 2008
BioBlitz will be held at Heritage
Valley in western Allamakee County this weekend, Saturday and Sunday,
Aug. 23 and 24.
The BioBlitz is a time of discovery, identification and assessment to
learn more about plant and animal species on a unique conservation
property along the Upper Iowa River.
A non-profit conservation group, The Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation
(INHF), purchased the property - now called Heritage Valley - from the
estate of the late Forrest and Gladys Ryan last year. The site is
currently only open to the public during special events, such as the
BioBlitz.
Admission to BioBlitz is free and the public is welcome and encouraged
to attend.
A BioBlitz had been scheduled for earlier this summer but had to be
postponed due to the recent floods. The flooding caused extensive
damage to portions of the property, which will be a focus of this
weekend's event. Another BioBlitz is scheduled for June 2009.
INHF and the Iowa Natural History Association are sponsoring BioBlitz.
Staff from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and nature experts
from colleges, universities, nature groups and clubs will also be
involved. INHF will share the findings with the conservation community
and use it to develop the most appropriate land management plans for
each habitat. The event provides a special opportunity for interested
Iowans of all ages and backgrounds to work with scientists and
specialists as both learn more about Iowa's plant and animal species.
From 1 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday, biologists with a particular
expertise will lead teams of volunteers in taking inventory of wildlife
and plants, from fish and frogs to ferns and fungi.
For more information and to register for the event, visit
www.inhf.org/bioblitz-2008.htm or call 1-800-475-1846. Participants
must be able to handle rough terrain, long walks and steep slopes and
should be prepared for inclement weather, heat and insects.
The purpose of a BioBlitz is to celebrate nature's wonders and the
community of humans who protect them. Heritage Valley contains hillside
prairies, limestone bluffs, mature oak and hickory forests, three miles
of the Upper Iowa River and wildlife diversity.
